California Diesel Prices Shatter Records

(MENAFN) Diesel prices in California have shattered records, surging to their highest level ever documented, according to the latest figures released by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The average price of diesel across the state reached $7.018 per gallon on Tuesday — an unprecedented peak in AAA’s database — standing nearly $1.70 above the current U.S. national average of approximately $5.345 per gallon.

American media outlets traced the price spike to a double blow: a significant contraction in domestic oil-refining capacity compounded by severe disruptions to global energy shipments stemming from the ongoing war in Iran. California has shed two refineries since October 2025 alone, wiping out roughly 20 percent of the state’s total refining output in under six months.

The economic shockwaves are already being felt beyond the pump. Analysts and industry observers warn that surging diesel costs are pushing transportation expenses sharply higher, with cascading price pressures threatening to ripple across essential consumer sectors — including food, building materials, and retail goods reliant on diesel-powered freight networks.
