Missile attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City Qatar Energy reports "widespread damage"
QatarEnergy, the state oil giant of Qatar, stated on Wednesday that the Ras Laffan Industrial City has suffered “extensive damage” following a missile attack. Earlier, the country’s Ministry of Interior reported that an attack from Iran had sparked a fire in the region.
The world’s second-largest liquefied natural gas exporter said in a statement: Emergency teams were immediately deployed to control the resulting fire. The statement noted that there were no reports of casualties, and all personnel have been confirmed safe.
Qatar condemned the attack in a statement, calling it a “direct threat” to its national security. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that Iran consistently targets Qatar and its neighbors, describing it as an “irresponsible act.”
Earlier, the Qatari Ministry of Interior stated that civil defense personnel were dealing with the fire that erupted in the Ras Laffan area following the Iranian attack. The Ministry indicated that the fire in the Ras Laffan area has been preliminarily brought under control, with no reports of casualties.
Ras Laffan, located 80 kilometers north of Doha, is an energy industrial hub that houses several international companies.
According to Iranian state media, Iran had earlier issued evacuation warnings for several oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, including the Ras Laffan refinery, stating these facilities would be targeted in “the coming hours.”
A source informed Reuters on Wednesday that following Iran’s threats to attack Gulf energy facilities, Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facility is in the process of evacuation.
