Regarding the U.S. claim that the number of Panama-flagged vessels detained by China has surged, seemingly aimed at punishing Panama, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded at a regular press conference that China’s position on the port issues related to Panama is clear. The U.S. side’s repeated comments only expose its own ambitions to dominate the canal.

Additionally, the U.S. claims that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (00981) provided chip manufacturing equipment to the Iranian military. Lin Jian stated, “I am not familiar with the situation you mentioned. What I can tell you is that recently, some media outlets have eagerly published misleading information, which we found to be false after verification.”

When asked about a recent incident where a Chinese postdoctoral researcher committed suicide the day after being questioned by U.S. law enforcement officials, Lin Jian expressed deep sorrow over this tragedy, stating that China has lodged a solemn representation with the U.S. side. The Chinese embassy and consulate in the U.S. has promptly contacted the family of the individual and provided active assistance in handling the aftermath.

Lin Jian pointed out that for some time, the U.S. has generalized the concept of national security for political manipulation, indiscriminately interrogating and harassing Chinese students and scholars, infringing upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens, disrupting the normal atmosphere of cultural exchange between China and the U.S., and creating a serious chilling effect. China urges the U.S. to thoroughly investigate this case, provide a responsible explanation to the victims’ families and to China, stop discriminatory law enforcement against Chinese scholars and students in the U.S., and halt the fabrication of various wrongful cases. China will continue to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its citizens.

Furthermore, Lin Jian mentioned that the two sides are maintaining communication regarding U.S. President Trump’s visit to China.
