A federal judge in San Francisco, the United States, approved on Thursday a request for a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit filed by the AI startup Anthropic against the Trump administration.

Anthropic previously sued the U.S. government, seeking to overturn the Pentagon’s decision to place it on a blacklist, as well as a Trump order banning federal agencies from using its Claude model.

Anthropic sought an injunction to pause these actions and to prevent further economic and reputational damage while the case develops.

In a statement after Thursday’s ruling, Anthropic said: “We appreciate the court’s prompt decision and are encouraged to see that they recognize Anthropic is likely to prevail. While this case is critical to protecting Anthropic, our customers, and partners, we will remain committed to working effectively with the government to ensure that all Americans can benefit from safe and reliable artificial intelligence.”

In the judge’s ruling, it states: “Punishing Anthropic for publicly scrutinizing the government’s contracting position is a classic unlawful retaliation that violates the First Amendment.” The final decision in the case may still take months to be announced.
