Chinese airline becomes the first to win the global low-cost carrier championship
Authoritative Rankings, Latest Release
On March 18, airline review website AirlineRatings announced the “2026 World’s Best Airlines” list.
This year, Qatar Airways remains at the top of the full-service airline rankings, with Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong ranking second, and Hainan Airlines in 14th place. China’s three major airlines did not make it into the Top 20.
Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific’s subsidiary HK Express has risen from 4th place last year to the top of the Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) list, earning the title of Best Low-Cost Airline in the world for the first time. Spring Airlines is ranked 20th among low-cost carriers.
Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings, stated that although HK Express does not offer Wi-Fi or in-flight entertainment, its strengths lie in stable cabin service and dining experience. Its onboard menu features Hong Kong street snacks and international cuisine, maintaining a balance between service, comfort, and value.
Over the past year, HK Express has continued expanding its Asian routes and increasing capacity, carrying nearly 8 million passengers annually. That means for every 8 travelers at Hong Kong International Airport, 1 chooses HK Express.
In addition to its overall ranking, Cathay Pacific also received multiple segment awards this year, including Best Business Class, Best Airline Lounge, and Best Cargo Operator.
Beyond the rankings, Cathay Pacific’s recent financial results also show signs of recovery.
The financial report indicates that in 2025, Cathay Pacific Group achieved a net profit of HKD 10.828 billion, a 9.5% increase year-over-year; revenue reached HKD 116.766 billion, up 11.9%.
The company stated that 2023 to 2025 are its three best years, with cumulative profits nearly offsetting pandemic-related losses.
AirlineRatings also announced results in other categories, including Lufthansa as the Best Hybrid Airline, Porter Airlines as the Best Regional Airline, Jetstar as the Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Carrier, and Singapore Changi Airport for the second consecutive year as the Best Airport.
