OpenAI Killed Its Raunchy Chatbot Plans — Here’s Why
TLDR

OpenAI has put its plans for an erotic chatbot feature on hold with no set return date. The company had been considering allowing age-verified adults to have sexually explicit text conversations through ChatGPT, while keeping bans on explicit images, voice, and video in place.
The feature was originally aimed at a December 2025 launch, then pushed to early 2026. It never made it out.
OpenAI described the concept as treating users as adults, rather than offering full pornography. The plan would have relaxed content filters for verified users only.
But the idea ran into serious internal resistance. An advisory council pushed back hard, raising concerns about emotional overreliance on AI, harmful content, and scenarios described internally as “sexy suicide coach” situations.
Advisers also flagged worries about child safety and mental health safeguards. Those concerns, combined with technical hurdles and ongoing safety evaluations, contributed to the indefinite pause.
No new launch date has been given.
OpenAI Also Kills Sora App
Around the same time, OpenAI announced it was shutting down Sora, its text-to-video generation app. The company said it needed to redirect computing resources toward higher-priority work.
Those priority areas include robotics and world simulation research, focused on real-world physical tasks.
The Sora shutdown affects both the consumer app and API access used by professionals. Users were encouraged to save any existing videos before access ends.
Disney Deal Falls Through
The Sora cancellation had a direct financial consequence. A planned $1 billion partnership with Disney was called off as a result.
The deal had involved character licensing and investment discussions between OpenAI and Disney. No details were given on whether talks could resume.
CEO Sam Altman has been steering the company through a period of shifting priorities. OpenAI is now focused on rolling more of its capabilities into a single super-app, rather than expanding into new content areas.
The erotic chatbot pause and the Sora shutdown both reflect that shift. The company appears to be pulling back from side projects to concentrate on its core products.
Internal debates at OpenAI over content policy are not new. The company has adjusted its guardrails on NSFW material several times as it faces competition in the AI sector.
For now, explicit text content remains off the table for ChatGPT users. OpenAI has not commented publicly on when or whether the adult mode feature might return.
The most recent confirmed action is the cancellation of the Disney partnership, which had been tied directly to the now-discontinued Sora app.
