Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Orders a Comprehensive Assessment of Oil-Related Supply Chains in Response to Iran War Impact

On Tuesday morning, Sanae Takaichi convened a meeting with relevant cabinet ministers in Tokyo and assigned the task to Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akazawa Ryo. Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and Defense Minister Kono Taro also attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Sanae Takaichi stated that she has asked the relevant ministers to accelerate their efforts to ensure energy security. Ryo Akazawa will be responsible for reviewing the entire supply chain of oil-related products, including naphtha, a key raw material for plastic production.

Japan has already begun utilizing its oil reserves and has committed to maintaining gasoline prices at around 170 yen per liter through subsidies. Meanwhile, the United States continues to pressure Japan to assist in ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz. Most of Japan’s oil imports come from the Middle East, and transportation must pass through this strait.

Sanae Takaichi emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East, including ensuring the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, is crucial for the international community, including Japan.
