Wang Yi had a phone call with the Canadian Foreign Minister: Both the United States and Iran are willing to restart negotiations, and China and Canada can play a constructive role in this.
On March 26, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, held a phone call with Canadian Foreign Minister Anand upon request.
Anand introduced Canada’s stance on the Middle East situation, stating that Canada is committed to protecting civilians during the conflict, promoting de-escalation, preventing spillover, and reducing impacts on the global economy and supply chains. The Iran nuclear issue concerns the international non-proliferation system, and ensuring the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz aligns with the common interests of all parties. Canada is willing to work with China to mediate peace and stop the fighting, promoting regional peace and stability.
Wang Yi outlined China’s principled position, emphasizing that the Iran nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and should not be used as a reason for military action. Abuse of force will only cause serious repercussions, and spillover of the conflict threatens regional security and stability. Both the US and Iran are willing to restart negotiations, and the international community should encourage both sides to return to the negotiating table and seek effective political solutions. China and Canada can play a constructive role in this process.
The two sides also exchanged views on China-Canada relations, agreeing to actively and pragmatically implement the outcomes of Prime Minister Kan’s visit to China, restart dialogue at all levels, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote the stable and healthy development of a new type of strategic partnership between China and Canada.
