Qatar LNG Export Halt Reaches Longest Duration Since 2008

Qatar’s Ras Laffan, the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export plant, has not shipped any cargo for five consecutive days, marking the longest shutdown since 2008 and potentially driving up gas prices further. Since the U.S.-Israel airstrike on Iran on February 28, no LNG ships have traversed the Strait of Hormuz. The plant supplies nearly 20% of the world’s LNG. Last week’s unprecedented shutdown has caused a surge in Eurasian gas prices. Qatar mainly supplies Asia, and importers are currently seeking alternatives or reducing supplies. Prolonged shutdowns will tighten the global LNG market and may lead to shortages in emerging countries.
