IT Home, March 17th: The tech media Windows Central published a blog post yesterday (March 16th) reporting that after strong resistance from users, Microsoft quietly adjusted its AI strategy for Windows 11, planning to significantly reduce the forced integration of the Copilot AI solution in the software.

Microsoft Executive Vice President Yusef Mehdi had previously promised during a 2024 public demonstration that Copilot would be integrated into system-level interfaces such as Settings, Notification Center, and File Explorer.

IT Home cites the blog post, stating that due to widespread user resistance to the forced push of AI features and security concerns raised by the earlier “Recall” function, the market adoption of Windows 11 has been affected, leading Microsoft internally to shelve the above plans.

However, Microsoft has not stopped advancing AI features in Windows 11 but has chosen to strip the “Copilot” branding. The Settings app now includes a semantic search feature, and File Explorer has gained an AI operation menu.

But unlike the original idea of “Copilot handling tasks directly without opening an app,” the current features require switching to third-party applications to complete tasks.

Additionally, the underlying “Windows Copilot Runtime” has been renamed to “Windows AI API.” Copilot is now more closely integrated with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem and no longer functions as a system-wide resident assistant.

Among all shelved plans, reports indicate that the “Notification Center Copilot Suggestions” feature has been completely abandoned. This feature was originally intended to allow users to reply to messages or open files with a single click in pop-up windows.

In response, a Microsoft spokesperson said that the company’s product development strategy is “to preview with customers and evolve based on feedback.” Collecting user opinions during this process and modifying, removing, or replacing features is routine. It is also revealed that this notification feature is unlikely to be released as a Copilot feature.
