On March 25th, local time, an American jury found that Meta, a metaverse platform company, and Google are responsible in a social media addiction lawsuit, and ordered both companies to pay $3 million in damages.

The case was filed by a 20-year-old woman. She accused these social media companies of creating highly addictive products, claiming that she became addicted at a young age due to the attention-grabbing design of Google’s YouTube and Meta’s Instagram platforms, which led to her suffering from anxiety and depression.

The jury determined that Meta and Google were negligent in designing these two applications and failed to adequately warn about their potential dangers.

Meta stated that it disagrees with the ruling and that its legal team is “evaluating legal options.” Google has not immediately commented.
