IAEA Director General: US and Iran May Hold Talks in Pakistan

According to Italy’s “Corriere della Sera” on the 25th, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the US and Iran might hold talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, this weekend.

In an interview with the “Corriere della Sera,” Grossi said the talks will cover not only nuclear energy but also missiles and Iran’s security guarantees.

Grossi pointed out that the US demands Iran achieve “zero uranium enrichment,” while Iran is concerned with civilian nuclear programs and nuclear autonomy. He believes that the US and Iran can reach consensus on these issues. He also mentioned that Iran’s nuclear facilities have been damaged in the US-Israeli military strikes, but not decisively.

Regarding feasible solutions to resolve the current conflict, Grossi said that peace must be achieved first, and “military action is not the way to solve the problem.”

In 2015, Iran reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany. Under the agreement, Iran limited its nuclear activities in exchange for the UN, US, and EU lifting sanctions. However, in 2018, the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA, restoring and escalating sanctions against Iran.
