In recent years, the term AIGC has rapidly gained attention across the entire internet. What is AIGC: The Fundamental Difference from Traditional Content Creation
AIGC stands for “AI Generated Content,” referring to technology that uses artificial intelligence to automatically generate content. “GC” means creative content, and as the name suggests, AIGC leverages AI to produce all kinds of content such as text, images, audio, and videos.
Traditionally, there have been three main methods of content creation. The first is PGC (Professional Generated Content), created by professionals; the second is UGC (User Generated Content), created by users themselves; and the third, which is gaining attention now, is AIGC. The biggest difference among these three is efficiency and scalability.
Currently, the most successful in the AIGC field is ChatGPT. It achieved astonishing growth, surpassing 100 million monthly active users within just one month of launch—outpacing past data from TikTok and Facebook. This rapid adoption demonstrates how high the global demand for AIGC truly is.
Technological Evolution: The Interaction Mechanism of Generative and Discriminative Models
A key technology foundation for AIGC is the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), proposed in 2014. At that time, this model quickly spread among major tech companies in the deep learning field and is now recognized as one of the earliest practical frameworks for AIGC.
The basic principle of GAN involves two neural networks competing and learning together. The generator (G) continuously creates content, while the discriminator (D) judges whether the content is real or fake. Through this iterative process of mutual optimization, the generated content eventually reaches a level indistinguishable from real data. In other words, the AI can produce content so realistic that humans cannot tell whether it was created by a person or AI. This breakthrough transformed AIGC from just a tool into a practical and reliable means of content creation.
AIGC in the Web3 Era: Integration with Blockchain
Starting in 2020, the integration of AIGC with blockchain technology began to accelerate. One of the first successful examples in the Web3 + AI space is Art Blocks, founded by Erick Snowfro. This innovative platform focuses on programmable generative art, with all created content permanently recorded on the Ethereum blockchain.
Art Blocks has an elegant mechanism. The generation process is managed by a series of numbers stored initially as NFTs on the Ethereum network. These number strings control the attributes that generate unique NFTs based on the buyer’s ideas. Creators pre-adjust their art scripts, deploy them on Art Blocks, and after verifying the output and input accuracy, store the scripts on the Ethereum network. When collectors mint a specific piece, a random hash is generated, the script runs, and a unique NFT corresponding to that hash is created.
In 2022, Binance officially launched Bicasso, its first AI product. Through this platform, users can add descriptions to utilize AI technology to generate new NFTs from their personal works. This is the first full-scale implementation of an “image-for-image” application in the blockchain space.
Rapid Evolution of AIGC: Expansion into Multiple Content Formats
Before 2021, AIGC was mainly limited to text generation, such as ghostwriting articles. However, with the advent of new-generation models, the range of processable content formats has expanded dramatically. Today, AIGC can generate text, audio, images, videos, and even actions—covering all kinds of content.
The pace of AIGC development in 2022 was overwhelming. Technologies that were still immature at the start of the year reached industry-pro level accuracy within just a few months, producing results that are highly practical. This astonishing speed of evolution clearly shows how rapidly AIGC is maturing.
Metaverse and AIGC: Synergistic Effects Leading to a New Era
It took about ten years from conceptualization to product completion for AIGC. However, this maturity has made the realization of the metaverse no longer a pipe dream. With AIGC’s support, the labor required for content creation in virtual worlds can be significantly reduced.
The rapid development of the metaverse depends heavily on AIGC. Automating production processes with AI allows for high-quality content to be produced efficiently. With AI’s help, the possibilities for applications and creative imagination are virtually limitless.
