Analysis | US-Japan Summit Imminent: What Are the Implications of Bilateral Collaboration on Deep-Sea Mining?
Caixin Recently, Japan has been taking continuous actions to increase rare earth supply. Not only did they complete deep-sea rare earth mud testing at the beginning of the year, but in March, they also secured future supplies with leading overseas rare earth producers. As Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is about to visit the United States, the emerging field of deep-sea mining is expected to once again attract attention.
President Trump will meet with Sanae Takaichi at the White House on March 19. Amid recent geopolitical fluctuations, deep-sea rare earth cooperation and development may be one of the focuses of this US-Japan summit. In February, Sanae Takaichi revealed on a Japanese radio program that she intends to call for US participation in rare earth resource extraction around Minamitorishima Island during the meeting.
