UK and US Plus Canada Reopen Hormuz Strait Operations; Germany Cool on Escort Role

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak discussed with US President Trump on Sunday the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to end the global shipping disruptions. Additionally, a spokesperson from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that Sunak also had a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during which they discussed the ongoing closure of the strait and its impact on international shipping. They will continue to discuss the Middle East situation on Monday.

Meanwhile, Germany is skeptical about the EU’s participation in escort operations in the Strait of Hormuz. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the EU has assisted merchant ships passing through the Red Sea, but the results have been unsatisfactory. Therefore, she is highly doubtful that expanding the operation to the Strait of Hormuz would provide greater security.
