Iranian Representative Calls on UN to Take Decisive Action Against US-Israeli Military Strikes
Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Iraj Masjedi, issued a statement at the UN headquarters in New York on the 2nd, calling for the UN to take “firm, clear, and unequivocal action” against the military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran. The statement said that the military strikes by the US and Israel are an “intentional act of aggression” that blatantly violate the UN Charter and are a direct attack on the foundations of international law. The deliberate targeting of Iran’s top leaders and several senior military officials by the US and Israel severely breaches international law and constitutes a direct assault on sovereignty and equality. Such actions threaten the entire international system. The US and Israel’s intentional attacks on Iranian civilians and civilian infrastructure, including an attack on a girls’ school in Hormozgan Province in southern Iran, which caused numerous casualties, are acts of aggression, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The statement said that Iran does not pose an imminent threat and that its nuclear program is entirely for peaceful purposes. Iran has been engaged in serious diplomatic negotiations. There is no legal basis to justify these attacks. Iran is exercising its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Its response is lawful, necessary, and proportionate, targeting only military objectives of hostile forces and not civilians. Iran does not seek war or escalation but will never relinquish its sovereignty. As long as the aggression continues, Iran will resolutely defend its interests without hesitation. The statement emphasized that the facts are clear, the aggression is clear, and the responsibility is clear. The Security Council must take “firm, clear, and unequivocal action.” The statement also pointed out that on the first day of the US holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in March, the US convened a high-level meeting on “protecting children, technology, and education in armed conflict” under the agenda of “maintaining international peace and security,” yet simultaneously launched missile attacks on Iranian cities, bombed schools, and killed children. Such actions are “extremely shameful and hypocritical.” (Xinhua)
