Iran's New Supreme Leader Issues First Statement as International Oil Prices Surge Past $100 Again

According to CCTV News, on Thursday local time, Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Muqtada al-Husayni, stated in a declaration read on national television that Iran will continue to adopt strategic measures, including blocking the Strait of Hormuz, and will also attack U.S. military bases in the Middle East. This is his first public statement since succeeding his father after his assassination.

In this strongly worded speech, Muqtada al-Husayni said the United States must close all its military bases in the Middle East. He stated that the Strait of Hormuz, located along Iran’s coast, should remain closed to exert pressure on “the enemy.” The strait is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, with about one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it.

Following the announcement, international oil prices surged briefly, with U.S. WTI crude reaching $96 per barrel, up 8.55% intraday; Brent crude rose 9.44% to $100.662 per barrel. Previously, oil prices had fallen after Trump indicated that the war was nearing its end.

In the statement, Muqtada al-Husayni expressed Tehran’s belief in “friendship” with neighboring countries and emphasized that Iran’s military actions target only U.S. military bases in these countries. He advised neighboring nations to close U.S. bases as soon as possible. “We have good relations with these 15 neighboring countries… We only target these military bases. We will continue, and must continue.”
