Recently, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology issued regulations that will take effect on March 28, banning social media use for individuals under 16 years old. The aim is to address issues such as online pornography, cyberbullying, online scams, and internet addiction. Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Metyar Hafiz, recently stated that the ban will be implemented in phases starting March 28, gradually shutting down accounts of users under 16 on platforms like YouTube and Facebook until all platforms comply with the regulations. She acknowledged that the initial implementation of the new rules might cause some inconvenience for Indonesian users but emphasized that this is the “best measure” the government can take to face challenges in the digital age. As of now, major social media companies’ Indonesian branches have not commented on the reports. Experts noted that, without sufficient transition periods and supporting measures, such “one-size-fits-all” restrictions could impact young people’s learning and digital skills development.
