Three Month Pilot

The three-month pilot program will take place in Grubhub-owner Wonder’s Green Brook, New Jersey location starting next week. It will deliver grub to customers within a 2.5-mile radius of the site. They will be able to order on the app and opt for drone delivery at no extra charge beyond the standard delivery and service fees.

The aerial delivery service will be powered by Dexa’s DE-2020, a fully automated aircraft that lowers food orders to the ground on a cable.

Dexa is one of only four U.S. companies that both builds and flies delivery drones. Its Telegrid DE-2020 v5 is a heavy-lift, FAA-certified autonomous aircraft purpose-built for commercial logistics. It has a maximum cruise air speed of 40mph and a flying distance of 6 miles.

Dexa also stresses that every component of its drones is manufactured either in the United States or in allied nations, with final assembly completed in its headquarters in downtown Dayton, Ohio.

Drone Food Wars

Grubhub said it would evaluate the pilot’s results before deciding whether to bring drone delivery to additional restaurant partners in the area.

The move adds to intensifying competition in the autonomous delivery space, where rivals DoorDash and Uber Eats are also pursuing drone and robotic delivery partnerships. Last June, for example, DoorDash and Flytrex announced the launch of their drone delivery service in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Wonder, a food hall and delivery startup, bought Grubhub from Dutch company Just Eat Takeaway for $650 million last year. That was 91% less than the $7.3 billion Just Eat Takeaway had paid ‌four years earlier.
