Hiroshi Kawanami: The Trump administration in the United States has been in office for 10 months. Although it initially achieved results in areas like tax cuts and immigration policies, it is now clearly struggling in diplomacy with China and controlling prices. Support among important independent voters for Trump has declined in both midterm and presidential elections, prompting Trump to begin partially rolling back tariffs and revise some of his more aggressive policies.

“Deep reflection should be on the Virginia gubernatorial election, not the New York City mayoral race,” said senior officials in the Trump administration. In Virginia, the Democrats reclaimed the governorship from the Republicans after three years.

The outcome of the election depends on independent voters. In the 2021 gubernatorial election, 54% of independents supported the Republican candidate. This time, the situation changed, with 59% voting for the Democratic candidate, 19 percentage points higher than the Republican candidate (40%).
