Where to Find the Most Affordable Places to Live in the USA Without Sacrificing Safety
Finding neighborhoods that balance low living costs with strong community security is genuinely challenging. The notion that “affordable” and “safe” communities are mutually exclusive has persisted for years, yet research shows there are pockets across America where both elements coexist. Our analysis identified 15 communities that successfully combine these priorities, with seven standouts emerging from Ohio alone—more than any other state.
Redefining Community Selection: How We Found These Most Affordable Places to Live
What makes a neighborhood truly suitable for those seeking cost-conscious relocation? We examined multiple dimensions: overall annual expenses, property values, violent crime metrics, property crime statistics, and livability scores. Using data from the FBI’s Quarterly Crime Statistics, the U.S. Census, Zillow’s housing indices (January 2025), the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and AreaVibes, we identified 150 of America’s safest communities with populations exceeding 10,000. These were then filtered for lowest total cost of living. All figures referenced represent 2025 baseline data, providing a valuable benchmark for current housing market evaluation.

This concentration suggests regional economic factors and community development strategies that successfully maintain affordable housing while supporting public safety initiatives.
