AUSSOM Pledges Full Commitment to Defeat al-Shabaab in Somalia
(MENAFN) The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has reaffirmed its determination to eliminate al-Shabaab’s insurgency and restore stability across the country, according to reports.
AUSSOM Force Commander Sam Kavuma, speaking during a field visit to evaluate the combat readiness of frontline troops after the successful liberation of the strategic towns of Mubarak and Durasalaam, said the allied forces remain committed to driving out the insurgents.
“Through sweat, struggle, and sacrifice, we stand united to eliminate al-Shabaab and secure a future for our brothers and sisters in Somalia,” he stated on Friday evening following the visit.
Kavuma urged the Ugandan troops serving under AUSSOM and the Somali National Armed Forces to maintain the highest levels of professionalism, morale, and discipline in carrying out the mission. “AUSSOM, in partnership with the Somali government and other stakeholders, will provide essential relief support to the liberated communities,” he added.
The joint operation earlier this week, conducted alongside international partners, resulted in the full capture of two towns that had long served as strongholds for al-Shabaab militants. Owiny Akena, commander of Battle Group 44 and the operation, confirmed that Mubarak and Durasalaam remain under the full control of the joint forces.
