U.S. enters "implementable phase" with Iran; White House briefing signals timing
On February 24th local time, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and CIA Director William Burns held a closed-door briefing at the White House for key members of the bipartisan Intelligence Committee and congressional leadership on the Iran situation. The timing of this briefing was particularly sensitive: it occurred just before Trump’s State of the Union address and within 48 hours of the start of a new round of Geneva talks between the U.S. and Iran. According to Washington’s security decision-making protocols, briefings of this level are typically used to inform the highest levels of Congress about critical intelligence and risk assessments related to potential military actions. As a result, public opinion generally believes that on the Iran issue, the U.S. has moved from the “strategic deterrence stage” to the “operational options stage,” meaning military options are no longer purely theoretical but have entered a decision-making zone where they can be activated at any time.
