According to two people familiar with the negotiations, at Apple’s request, Google has studied deploying servers within its data centers to run the upcoming version of Siri. This Gemini-powered digital assistant will also meet Apple’s privacy standards. Apple currently relies on Google Cloud for online storage, internal AI model training, and other services. According to a dozen former Apple executives and engineers, these cloud-related efforts have repeatedly faced obstacles in the past because Apple’s financial executives view cloud computing as a burdensome cost center rather than a strategic priority. These individuals said that Apple is reluctant to make large investments in its own infrastructure, leading to continuous turnover among cloud experts. A former employee revealed that the average utilization rate of Apple’s private cloud computing is only 10%, with some servers prepared for Apple AI cloud still stored in warehouses and not yet installed. However, if Apple claims that the new Siri launched this year is well-received by users, its AI computing power demand could rapidly surge, which also explains why Apple is negotiating with Google for managed assistant services.
