DDR5 memory kit selling for $4,000? E-commerce platform Newegg responds, saying there was a pricing system error.
IT Home, March 7 — On March 6, local time, according to foreign media Tom’s Hardware, the US e-commerce platform Newegg suddenly increased the prices of some Corsair Vengeance DDR5 and G.Skill Trident Z5 memory kits to $3,980 (IT Home note: approximately 27,529 RMB at current exchange rates).
It is reported that these two products are considered popular models among high-end DDR5 memory. At the time of the report, about 27 DDR5 memory kits on Newegg’s website were priced at $3,980. Most of these are from Corsair Vengeance DDR5 series, with only one from G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB series. These products range from 32GB (2×16GB) to 64GB (2×32GB), with frequencies from DDR5-4800 to DDR5-7600.
For example, the Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-6000C36 32GB kit was priced at $439.99 the day before the price spike, but suddenly changed to $3,980 afterward.
Prices at other US retailers remained unchanged; for instance, Amazon still maintained the original prices.
Similarly, the G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5-7600C36 32GB also experienced a similar situation. The day before, it was priced at $549.99, which was also the lowest market price for that model at the time.
This abnormal pricing also affected Newegg’s hardware bundle packages. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D combo, originally under $1,000, suddenly jumped to $4,542 overnight. Meanwhile, another Ryzen 7 9800X3D combo remained at the original price. The main difference between the two is that the latter is paired with V-Color memory instead of Corsair Vengeance series, so this pricing anomaly seems to only affect Corsair products.
Since the beginning of this year, retail prices for DDR5 memory have increased by approximately 25% to 50%.
Fortunately, there is an update: Newegg has confirmed to the media that these prices were due to a pricing error. An internal system malfunction affected over 50 SKUs, and the retailer is working to resolve the issue.
