According to four informed sources cited by Reuters, Saudi Arabia has informed Iran that while it prefers to resolve the Iran-U.S. conflict through diplomatic means, continued attacks by Iran on Saudi Arabia and its energy sector could force Riyadh to respond in kind.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologized last Saturday (7th) to neighboring Gulf countries in an effort to ease regional anger over Iran’s attacks on civilian targets.

However, Reuters quoted sources as saying that Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi two days ago, clearly expressing Saudi Arabia’s position.

It is reported that Faisal stated that Saudi Arabia is open to any mediation efforts aimed at easing tensions and resolving issues through negotiations, emphasizing that Riyadh and other Gulf countries do not permit the U.S. to use their airspace or territory to launch airstrikes against Iran.

Faisal also indicated that if Iran continues to attack Saudi territory or energy infrastructure, Saudi Arabia would be forced to allow U.S. military use of its bases in Saudi Arabia. He warned that if critical energy facilities in Saudi Arabia are further attacked, Riyadh will retaliate.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28, Saudi Arabia has maintained regular contact with Tehran through its ambassadors.

In an interview last Saturday, Araqchi said he maintains close contact with Saudi officials and added that Riyadh has assured Tehran that Saudi Arabia is fully committed to preventing its territory, waters, or airspace from being used for attacks against Iran.

Pezeshkian stated that the Iranian interim leadership committee has approved a suspension of attacks on neighboring countries unless the attacks originate from those countries.

However, Reuters indicated internal disagreements within Iran, citing sources who said some military commanders are still urging continued airstrikes, accusing the U.S. of using Gulf countries’ bases and airspace to conduct military operations against Iran.
