Techub News reports that Vancouver city government officials have recommended shutting down a council motion aimed at making Vancouver a "Bitcoin-friendly city." The report states that, according to the Vancouver Charter, municipal reserve assets are not allowed to hold Bitcoin, and recommends terminating the proposal to reallocate resources. The motion was introduced by Mayor Ken Sim at the end of 2024, requesting a study on accepting crypto payments for taxes and fees, as well as the possibility of converting some reserves into Bitcoin. However, the British Columbia Ministry of Municipal Affairs has previously clarified that provincial regulations do not permit municipal funds to hold cryptocurrencies to avoid unnecessary risks.
