Michelle Bond Challenges Prosecutors in Ryan Salame FTX Campaign Finance Case
Michelle Bond, the former congressional candidate and spouse of ex-FTX executive Ryan Salame, filed court documents in May 2024 contending that federal prosecutors engaged in improper conduct to secure her husband’s guilty plea. According to filings from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Bond claims the government made representations regarding her own prosecution status that she characterizes as intentionally misleading.
The Campaign Finance Prosecution Claims
Bond’s legal challenge centers on allegations that prosecutors assured her she would face no campaign finance prosecution if her husband accepted a plea arrangement. Court documents filed in mid-2024 state: “The government cannot use its overwhelming bargaining advantage to coerce a plea agreement and then fail to live up to its terms.” The filing further contends: “It cannot mislead a defendant into believing there is no active investigation in the hopes of obtaining statements the defendant can use later to his or her detriment.”
Despite these representations, Bond was subsequently charged in August 2024 with violating campaign finance statutes. Prosecutors alleged she participated in a “sham consulting arrangement” with FTX that provided her hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund her 2022 House campaign. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams stated: “Michelle Bond and her romantic partner attempted to fund her campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives by illegally using corporate funds, among other sources, and then lying to Congress and others to cover it all up.”
Allegations of Government Misconduct
Bond’s legal team argues the government engaged in prosecutorial misconduct by allegedly making specific promises regarding her legal exposure while simultaneously conducting an active investigation against her. This disconnect between stated position and prosecutorial action forms the basis of her challenge to the proceedings involving her husband’s case.
Ryan Salame’s Lengthy Prison Sentence and Broader FTX Context
Ryan Salame, who operated the only non-Democratic political profile among FTX’s senior executives, began serving a federal prison sentence exceeding seven years in late 2024. His conviction stems from operating an unlicensed money-transmitting service and participating in unlawful political contributions. The extended sentence reflects the severity of his charges, though prosecutors have characterized them as separate from the broader FTX fraud scandal.
Notably, Salame maintained no involvement in Sam Bankman-Fried’s massive fraud scheme that resulted in the FTX founder receiving a 25-year prison term. Legal observers have noted the contrast between the treatment of FTX executives based on their political associations and roles within the organization’s operations.
