Huawei's two major automotive businesses make their first joint appearance, unveiling ultra-high-line laser radar
Caixin Huawei has two major automotive business units: Hongmeng Smart Mobility and Intelligent Vehicle Solutions (referred to as “Car BU”). The two have been relatively independent in the past, with potential internal competition. On March 4th, Car BU’s CEO Jin Yuzhi attended the Hongmeng Smart Mobility technology launch for the first time and introduced Huawei’s new generation laser radar. This was also his and Huawei’s terminal chairman Yu Chengdong’s first joint appearance.
Car BU was established in 2019. At that time, Huawei explicitly stated “not to build cars,” aiming to become a supplier of incremental components to help automakers produce better vehicles. Car BU is the vehicle for this goal. In September 2020, Huawei Terminal Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Huawei Terminal”) was sanctioned by the U.S., resulting in chip supply disruptions and difficulties in the mobile phone and electronic consumer products business. To maintain sales channels, Yu Chengdong chose to get involved in the automotive industry.
