【AI+ Chips】Meta plans to develop custom chips to train its own artificial intelligence models
Facebook’s parent company Meta (US: META) has recently reached major deals with several top chipmakers, but Meta’s Chief Financial Officer Susan Li stated that the company remains ambitious about developing custom chips, including plans to develop processors for training future artificial intelligence (AI) models.
Li said, “Some of our workloads are indeed highly customized, initially starting with workloads like ranking and recommendations, which are also areas for large-scale deployment of custom chips, but we hope to expand over time and eventually apply them to training AI models.”
She added that the company is sourcing different types of chips to handle various tasks, “Based on the current information and actual needs, what do we think is the most suitable chip for each application scenario? Custom chips make up a significant part.”
While Meta is not a cloud computing provider, it is one of the main operators of data centers used for training and running AI models. In recent weeks, it has reached huge agreements with NVIDIA (US: NVDA) and AMD (US: AMD) on chips and equipment to drive AI workloads. Meanwhile, Meta has also been continuously developing its internal AI processors.
