Applied Optoelectronics Launches 210,000 Square Foot Manufacturing Hub in Sugar Land, Texas
Applied Optoelectronics Inc. (NASDAQ: AAOI), a major supplier of optical networking solutions powering global internet infrastructure, officially broke ground on its massive new manufacturing facility in Sugar Land, Texas on February 10, 2026. The 210,000 square foot complex, located at 1111 Gillingham Street, represents a significant expansion of AOI’s domestic production capabilities as the company positions itself to capture growing demand from the AI and data center sector.
The project signals AOI’s confidence in long-term market opportunities. CEO Dr. Thompson Lin outlined the company’s ambitious investment trajectory: “This facility marks a critical moment for our business. We’re increasing our total investment commitment in this location and our headquarters from $150 million to potentially $300 million by the close of 2026. Beyond capital, we’re dedicated to recruiting 500 skilled workers to manage our advanced production lines, directly supporting AOI’s vision of becoming a leading domestic source of optical transceivers for the rapidly expanding AI and data center market.”
Strategic Investment Driving Expansion Goals
The $300 million investment underscores AOI’s bet on sustained demand for optical infrastructure as artificial intelligence workloads continue multiplying across cloud providers and enterprises. CFO Dr. Stefan Murry highlighted the geographic logic: “Texas has emerged as the epicenter of AI innovation and advanced manufacturing. By expanding our presence here, we’re not just building capacity—we’re anchoring ourselves in a critical ecosystem. This growth initiative creates jobs while strengthening our domestic supply chain for optical components that power the next generation of computing infrastructure.”
500 Local Jobs and Economic Impact
The manufacturing expansion will inject significant employment opportunities into Fort Bend County. The facility requires a skilled workforce to program, operate, and maintain AOI’s automated production systems, contributing to local economic development and establishing Sugar Land as an emerging hub for advanced optical manufacturing.
Community and Government Support
Mayor Carol McCutcheon and representatives from Fort Bend County attended the groundbreaking ceremony, alongside project partners LCC3 Solutions Inc. and Atlantic Building Consultant & Services, who are managing construction and project oversight. The collaborative effort reflects strong government backing for the expansion, positioning Sugar Land as a preferred location for technology manufacturing investments.
