Guinea shipping costs may rise; bauxite prices expected to rebound

According to SMM research, the current sea freight rate from Guinea to China (bulk cargo) remains steady at $23.5 per wet ton. Some clients have reported that due to rising crude oil prices, there is an upward expectation for shipping costs. The supply of bauxite in Guinea is expected to decrease—if mines cannot lock in suitable shipping rates, shipments may be temporarily delayed. Meanwhile, new alumina capacity in Guangxi is about to come online, leading to increased procurement demand recently. Although there were no actual transactions of Guinea bauxite today, considering the rising cost center, the market expects spot transaction prices to rebound to the $61-63 per dry ton range. The SMM index price today is $62.03 per dry ton.
