On the 6th, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Jean-Noël Pavary took office as the French Consul General in Nuuk. France is the first EU country to establish a consular office in Greenland. According to the French Foreign Ministry, the consulate will not only provide routine consular services for French citizens but also promote scientific cooperation with Greenland and offer guidance to French companies interested in investing and establishing offices there.

Pavary said in an interview with France Public Radio on the 6th that only eight French citizens currently reside in Greenland. His appointment aims to “support French interests” and promote cooperation between France and Greenland.

According to French media reports, French President Emmanuel Macron announced during his visit to Greenland in June last year that France would establish a consulate there. French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna stated in an interview with the media in January that opening a consulate in Greenland is a “political signal.”

Since early 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to acquire Greenland, even suggesting the possibility of “military force” to seize the island. Europe strongly responded, emphasizing that Greenland’s sovereignty is not negotiable. (Xinhua News Agency)
