【AI+Competition】OpenAI users initiate boycott movement; ChatGPT uninstallation in the US surges by 295%; Claude downloads soar (Second Edition)

Anthropic’s AI model Claude recently surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT to become the most downloaded free app in the US Apple App Store. ChatGPT is now in second place, while Google’s Gemini trails behind in fourth.

According to foreign media reports, after the Trump administration disabled Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI was quickly reported to have reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy OpenAI models on classified military networks. This event triggered a boycott movement among OpenAI users on Reddit and X, with many canceling subscriptions, uninstalling ChatGPT, and switching to Claude.

Sensor Tower: US users’ ChatGPT uninstallation surges by 295%

Additionally, data platform Sensor Tower reports that on February 28, US uninstalls of the ChatGPT mobile app spiked by 295% compared to the previous day, far above the normal daily average of 9% over the past 30 days. Downloads also declined simultaneously, dropping 13% on that day and another 5% on March 1.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has become a major beneficiary: its Claude app downloads in the US surged by 37% on February 27 and further increased by 51% on February 28. Reports also indicate that within just a few days, about 700,000 users canceled ChatGPT subscriptions or uninstalled the app to switch to Claude.

Recently, Anthropic was designated as a “supply chain risk” company by the Department of Defense for refusing to unconditionally open its AI model Claude to the U.S. military. The department banned any contractors or vendors working with the military from doing business with Anthropic and prohibited federal agencies from using its technology. However, reports suggest that the U.S. Central Command still used Anthropic’s Claude during military operations in Iran.
