How to securely transfer your Google Authenticator account when changing devices
When switching to a new smartphone device, it is crucial to securely transfer your Google Authenticator data as part of your security measures. Improper account management can lead to the risk of being unable to authenticate after changing devices. This guide introduces two main methods for transferring authentication system data during device migration.
Transferring Authentication System to a New Device Using QR Codes
The most intuitive and reliable method is to use the QR code transfer approach. By following the steps below, you can smoothly transfer your account information from your old device to your new one.
Steps on the Old Device
First, open the Google Authenticator app on your old smartphone. Tap the three-dot menu icon (︙) in the top right corner to display the transfer options. Select "Transfer accounts," then tap "Export accounts." For security, you may be prompted to enter your PIN code.
After selecting the accounts to transfer, tap "Next," and a QR code will appear on the screen. This QR code is essential for scanning on your new device, so keep the old device's screen open. Additionally, it’s helpful to have the Google Authenticator app already installed on your new smartphone for a smoother process.
Steps on the New Device
Open the Google Authenticator app on your new smartphone, tap the menu icon in the top right corner, then select "Transfer accounts" → "Import accounts." Tap "Scan QR code" to activate the camera.
Scan the QR code displayed on your old device. This will transfer the account information within the authentication system to your new device. Once the scan is complete, the transfer process is finished. If the account list appears on the confirmation screen, the transfer was successful.
Transferring Authentication System Using Recovery Key Phrases
If QR code transfer is not feasible or you prefer a simpler method, you can use recovery key phrases. This approach is especially useful when changing devices.
Setup Steps on the New Device
Download and open the Google Authenticator app on your new device, then tap the "+" icon. From the menu, select "Enter a setup key."
On the next screen, enter the recovery key phrase in the "Key" section. This phrase is a long string generated when you set up your account on the original device. If you manage multiple accounts within the authentication system, you can label each one with a custom name (e.g., "Email," "Work Account") in the "Account" section for easier identification later.
After entering the recovery key, the new authentication system will be activated, granting access to the corresponding accounts.
Points to Note When Setting Up Authentication After Device Change
After transferring your authentication system, there are some important considerations. If the randomly generated codes do not work properly or if synchronization issues occur, it is recommended to use the Google Authenticator’s sync feature.
If you manage the same account across multiple devices, it is important to delete the old device’s Google Authenticator app or ensure the transfer is fully completed before removing it. Keeping authentication data on both old and new devices during the transition can increase security risks.
Transferring your authentication system during device change is a vital step toward secure and reliable account protection. Choose one of the methods above to safely transfer your account information to your new device.
