Ankara deploys additional armed forces to Somalia to deepen military operations against the Youth Party
The Turkish government has dispatched additional F-16 fighter jets and attack helicopter units to Somalia, marking a further escalation of Ankara’s counter-terrorism efforts in the East African region. According to intelligence obtained, Turkey has deployed a limited but capable air force in Mogadishu and surrounding areas to carry out concentrated strikes against the Al-Shabaab militants.
Air Power Deployment Strengthens Counter-Terrorism Operations
This deployment of fighter jets represents a significant upgrade in Turkey’s anti-terrorism operations in Somalia. In addition to the new aerial forces, Ankara continues to provide training and equipment support to the Somali military, helping the local government enhance its combat capabilities. Recently, Somalia’s cabinet replaced the Army Chief, aiming to further integrate military resources and conduct more coordinated and effective operations against armed extremists.
US-Turkey Joint Efforts to Counter Regional Extremist Forces
In Somalia’s counter-terrorism efforts, Turkey has formed a close tactical partnership with the United States. Besides supporting Turkey’s operations, the U.S. also considers combating ISIS militants a key objective in Somalia. This joint approach reflects a shared threat assessment against organizations like Al-Shabaab and demonstrates the Western coalition’s coordinated strategy in East Africa.
Long-term Strategic Planning and Energy Interests
Beyond short-term military actions, Ankara’s strategic engagement in Somalia is driven by deeper considerations. Since 2017, Turkey has established a military training base in Mogadishu and has been expanding its influence through defense, energy, and infrastructure projects. Notably, Turkey plans to conduct oil exploration and extraction along Somalia’s coast, indicating that Ankara views Somalia as an important resource hub and strategic foothold. These initiatives aim to solidify Turkey’s geopolitical position in the Horn of Africa.
