Paradex identifies the cause of massive liquidations after maintenance incident
The decentralized exchange Paradex has announced a $650,000 reimbursement plan for 200 users affected by an unplanned liquidation event. The incident was caused by a technical issue during a scheduled database update that occurred on January 19.
The technical root: a concurrency error during data update
According to reports from PANews, the specific cause was a race condition during critical database operations. During the 30-minute maintenance window, this synchronization problem caused corrupt data to be stored in cloud systems and subsequently propagated to the Paradex Chain. The error was particularly critical because it directly affected the market funding indices.
Cascading effects: indicator resets and unexpected liquidations
The immediate consequence was that the funding indices were reset to zero across multiple markets simultaneously. This anomaly caused unreal gains and losses in traders’ positions, triggering a chain liquidation event that affected hundreds of users. The scenario exemplified how a single technical failure can cause a domino effect in decentralized trading platforms.
Containment and recovery measures
Paradex responded quickly by pausing platform access and reverting the blockchain to a state prior to the start of maintenance. The platform also canceled all open orders except for take-profit and stop-loss orders, protecting them from the extreme volatility caused by the incident.
Comprehensive compensation plan
The $650,000 reimbursement plan aimed at the 200 users directly affected demonstrates Paradex’s commitment to damage repair. This decision underscores the importance of identifying the root cause of such incidents and establishing robust preventive protocols in DeFi infrastructures. The event also served as a critical reminder that even routine updates can pose significant risks if not managed with the strictest security protocols.
