The evolution of quantum technology poses a long-term challenge to Bitcoin—industry leaders warn
Major Bitcoin storage company Casa and industry leaders have pointed out that the rapid development of quantum computing could pose new risks to the Bitcoin system. In December 2025, these security experts are once again raising alarms and calling for increased awareness across the entire industry, including the Bitcoin founding community.
Quantum Risks Revealed from 18 Months of Research
Casa co-founder Jayson Loppe reported the results of 18 months of publicly available research on the X platform. His main conclusion is that the best-case scenario for the Bitcoin ecosystem is a stagnation or decline in the development of quantum computing technology.
This warning is based on the technical challenge that quantum computers could potentially break ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography), which underpins Bitcoin’s security. However, it is considered unlikely that the Bitcoin network will face direct threats in the near future.
Practical Challenges in a Network-Wide Overhaul
As a response to the quantum era, adapting the entire Bitcoin network to post-quantum cryptography is not just a technical upgrade but a complete system rebuild. This transformation involves numerous complex challenges.
Implementation is expected to take 5 to 10 years, given the need to migrate hundreds of millions of users, countless wallets, and vast assets. Security industry experts emphasize the unprecedented scale of this technological shift and the complexity of fund transfers involved.
Strategic Preparations the Industry Should Make Now
Casa co-founders advocate a balanced approach of “hopes for the best while preparing for the worst.” This means continuously monitoring the development of quantum computing while simultaneously researching and preparing long-term solutions.
The entire Bitcoin industry needs to develop strategic responses to this potential technological challenge. While the immediate threat is limited, from a medium- to long-term perspective, the evolution of cryptographic asset security remains a critical research theme for the industry.
