Amazon's new web interface enhances Alexa+ as a direct competitor to ChatGPT and Gemini
Amazon has transformed its Alexa assistant through an innovative new browser interface available on Alexa.com, redefining how users interact with its generative AI platform. This rollout marks a strategic inflection point for the company, projecting its assistant beyond smart audio and mobile devices into the web space where it directly competes with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Comprehensive Reach: Beyond Traditional Chat
The new interface represents a significant expansion of Alexa+’s capabilities. After nine months of evolution since its initial limited preview launch, Amazon has integrated functionalities that turn the platform into a complete ecosystem for smart home management, commerce, and productivity.
Users can now generate images from textual descriptions, manage household tasks, access controls for connected devices like Ring cameras and thermostats, handle shopping on Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods, and upload documents directly from the browser. The interface maintains continuous context across Echo devices, the Alexa mobile app, and desktop browsers, offering interaction both in writing and via voice.
A Differentiating Strategy Against Competitors
While other autonomous AI chatbots have begun offering commercial and task management features, Alexa+ stands out by deeply integrating smart home control. This competitive advantage reflects Amazon’s unique position in the connected device market—something competitors like OpenAI and Google do not possess equally.
Recently, Amazon has adopted a more restrictive stance toward third-party tools executing automated actions on its platform, including the legal notice sent to Perplexity regarding its Comet browser. This policy suggests the company aims to consolidate control over AI experiences within its ecosystem.
An Agnostic Model and Privacy as Cornerstones
Amazon emphasizes that Alexa+ operates under an “agnostic model” approach, not relying exclusively on a single large language model, reflecting a strategic collaboration with Anthropic, creator of Claude. This technical approach provides flexibility in selecting AI capabilities.
Regarding privacy, Amazon underscores that the web deployment does not alter its commitment to protecting user data. The platform allows customers to review all interactions, attachments, voice recordings, and web activity, as well as providing a customizable privacy dashboard.
Availability and Expansion Outlook
Currently, access to Alexa.com remains limited to users in the Alexa+ Early Access program. Amazon has not yet announced a specific date for broader public availability, although reported growth—doubling conversations, tripling purchases, and increasing recipe requests—suggests that expansion is imminent.
