Amazon Restricts Remote Workers in India From Coding and Strategic Tasks Amid Visa Crisis
Amazon has made an unusual concession to some staff members stranded in India by offering temporary remote work privileges through early March, marking a departure from its strict five-day office attendance mandate. The tech giant issued an internal directive permitting employees present in India as of December 13 who are awaiting rescheduled visa interviews to continue working remotely until March 2.
The H-1B Visa Disruption Behind the Decision
The policy shift stems from significant backlogs in the H-1B visa processing system triggered by fresh regulations introduced by the Trump administration. New protocols require consular officers to conduct mandatory social media reviews of applicants, causing some visa appointments to be postponed by several months or potentially years. This disruption has created an unprecedented bottleneck affecting numerous multinational corporations.
Strict Limitations on Remote Permissions
Despite granting remote access, Amazon bans its India-based remote workers from performing numerous critical functions. Prohibited activities include code development and testing, system troubleshooting, making key strategic determinations, customer engagement, contract negotiations and execution, and even entering Amazon facilities. The company mandates that all evaluations, major decisions, and authorizations must occur outside India’s jurisdiction, with no flexibility for local regulatory exceptions.
Real-world Impact on Technical Workforce
For technical employees whose primary responsibilities center on software development and deployment, these restrictions create significant operational challenges. The company has provided no clear timeline or alternative arrangements for staff whose visa interviews extend beyond the March 2 deadline. Additionally, some US diplomatic missions have reportedly scheduled appointments as distant as 2027, leaving affected employees in substantial uncertainty.
Industry Context
Amazon ranks among the most substantial H-1B visa program participants. During the 2024 fiscal year, the company sponsored nearly 14,800 certified H-1B positions, demonstrating the scale of potential workforce impact from the current visa delays.
