What time do the US stocks open? A complete guide for Vietnamese Traders
When Should You Keep an Eye on U.S. Stock Exchanges?
If you're looking into what time the U.S. stock market opens, the answer depends on which exchange you follow and the time of year. The top U.S. stock exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX) all operate during regular hours from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time (ET). But to trade effectively from Vietnam, you need to know exactly how these times convert to Hanoi time.
U.S. Stock Market Trading Hours in Vietnam Time
Main Trading Hours (Regular Trading Hours):
From Monday to Friday, the three major U.S. stock exchanges are open from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET. Converting to Vietnam time, this is from 8:30 PM to 3:00 AM (summer) or 9:30 PM to 4:00 AM (winter).
What does this mean for you? If you're in Hanoi, you can start trading at 8:30 PM that evening, continue overnight until 3:00-4:00 AM the next morning. This is why many Vietnamese traders stay awake late at night to monitor the U.S. market.
Pre-Market & After-Hours Trading (Pre-Market & After-Hours):
NYSE and AMEX start trading from 6:30 AM ET, which is 5:30 or 6:30 PM Vietnam time (depending on the season). Nasdaq also has pre-market trading from 8:00 AM ET, corresponding to 8:00 PM summer (or 9:00 PM winter) Vietnam time.
After the market closes at 4:00 PM ET, after-hours trading continues until 8:00 PM ET on AMEX and 6:30 PM ET on Nasdaq. This opens trading opportunities from 4:00-6:30 AM or 5:00-7:30 AM Vietnam time.
The Main Stock Exchanges You Need to Know
NYSE - The Oldest Stock Exchange
With over 228 years of operation, NYSE is the leading global market (with a capitalization of about 30 trillion USD). It lists 2,400 companies, including major U.S. economic giants. Famous indices like Dow Jones, S&P 500, and NYSE Composite are traded on this exchange.
Nasdaq - The Tech Company Paradise
Nasdaq ranks second in size with a total market cap of 10 trillion USD. Its distinctive feature is that it focuses on leading tech companies: Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Tesla, etc. If you want to trade tech stocks or promising startups, Nasdaq is the place to follow.
AMEX - The Birthplace of Derivatives
AMEX is the third-largest in trading volume but has a special role: it was the pioneer in creating financial derivatives like options (n 1975) and ETFs (n 1993). This exchange mainly lists stocks of small-cap companies and thousands of derivative products.
How Do Summer and Winter Time Changes Affect Trading Hours?
The U.S. observes daylight saving time from March to November. This means ET time shifts by one hour compared to normal, and consequently, when the U.S. stock market opens according to Vietnam time also changes.
Specifically:
This change is very important—if you don't pay attention, you might miss trading opportunities or get confused about opening hours.
U.S. Market Holidays When Exchanges Are Closed
Unlike Vietnam, the U.S. has its own holiday schedule. In 2022, the NYSE, Nasdaq, and AMEX are completely closed on these days:
Mark these days—it's not only to know when trading is closed but also to prepare your trading strategies before the market closes.
Comparing with Other Major International Stock Markets
To get a broader view, here are the trading hours of other major markets:
Observation: The U.S. market has night trading hours according to Vietnam time, while Asian markets focus on morning and afternoon hours.
Important Notes When Trading U.S. Stocks from Vietnam
1. Not all Vietnamese brokers support after-hours trading
Many Vietnamese brokers only allow trading during the main hours (9:30 AM - 4:00 PM ET). If you want to participate in pre-market (pre-market) or after-hours (after-hours) sessions, check whether your broker supports it.
2. Settlement times vary depending on account type
This affects your ability to re-trade, especially if you follow a day trading strategy.
3. Keep track of daylight saving time changes
From March to November, opening hours are 1 hour earlier according to Vietnam time. This is a common pitfall—if you don't pay attention, you might set alarms at the wrong time and miss important trades.
Tools to Help Never Forget Trading Hours
Instead of trying to memorize all these times, use electronic calendar tools to save them. Some trading platforms like Mitrade offer real-time Economic Calendars, helping you stay updated on major international events and trading hours of major stock exchanges.
With this support, you can focus entirely on market analysis and making smart trades, rather than worrying about opening and closing times.
