Is it possible to live on the US minimum wage in 2025? The reality that no one tells
Many people dream of working in the USA thinking that any job there will solve their life. But here comes the spoiler: earning minimum American wage is more complicated than it seems. And keep in mind, we’re talking about a developed country. Let’s understand how this system really works.
The chaos of minimum wage in the USA: federal vs. state
The first thing you need to know is that there is no "one" minimum wage in the USA like in Brazil. The game is different there. The federal minimum wage has been set at US$ 7.25/hour since 2009 (that’s right, 16 years without adjustment), but each state, city, and even county can decide whether to pay more. And many do.
Result? A worker can earn from US$ 5.15/hour (Georgia, Wyoming) to US$ 17.50/hour (Washington DC). That’s an absurd variation. States like California (US$ 16.50/h), Washington (US$ 16.66/h), and New York (US$ 15.50/h to US$ 16.50/h depending on the city) are well above the federal.
How much do you really earn per month?
Here’s the calculation that every Brazilian wants to know. In the USA, salary is calculated per hour, so everything depends on how much you work. Considering the standard 40-hour workweek:
With the federal minimum of US$ 7.25/h:
Does that seem like a lot in reais? Let’s convert. With an exchange rate of US$ 1 = R$ 5.20 (data 2025):
Now, in Washington DC with US$ 17.50/h:
But wait. Here’s where the real problem begins.
The big problem: cost of living vs. salary
Nice numbers in conversion mean nothing if you can’t pay the bills. Check out the average costs in the USA in 2025:
Now do the math: with a federal minimum wage of US$ 1,160, you are US$ 1,651 short. That’s impossible. Even states with higher minimum wages face the same problem — where the minimum is US$ 17.50, rent is US$ 2,000 or more.
USA minimum wage vs. Brazil: who comes out ahead?
This comparison is more nuanced than it seems. In reais, US$ 1,160 is much more than the R$ 1,518 of the Brazilian minimum wage. But that doesn’t mean Americans live better.
Purchasing power is the real currency here.
One dollar in the USA buys fewer goods and services than the equivalent in reais in Brazil. Practical example: a simple lunch in São Paulo (US$ 5-7) costs US$ 12-15 in New York. A room in a favela in Rio (R$ 400-600) costs US$ 800-1,200 in any American peripheral neighborhood.
Additionally, Brazil has a single national minimum wage — the federal government sets it for everyone. The USA is fragmented. This creates a reality: in Washington DC you can live on minimum wage (barely, but you can). In Mississippi? Not at all.
Who earns minimum wage there?
Generally, those stuck at minimum in the USA:
Important: waiters, pizza makers, and others who receive tips can earn a much lower base (sometimes US$ 2.13/h), because tips are supposed to supplement. In theory.
The trend that’s changing the game
While the federal minimum has been frozen for 16 years, states are moving. California, New York, Washington, Massachusetts — all have increased significantly. Tech cities like Seattle and Austin have also raised their minimums. But here’s a detail: where wages go up more, the cost of living also rises.
This is important: it’s not enough to know the US minimum wage per month. You need to know which state or city you want to work in, because the difference is brutal. A gain of US$ 2/h may mean nothing if rent increases by US$ 300.
Final considerations for Brazilians
If you’re thinking about moving to the USA:
Don’t rely on the minimum wage. Look for careers that pay above that. Being an immigrant earning minimum wage is a recipe for debt and frustration.
Research the real cost of living in the city, not just the salary. Online communities of Brazilian immigrants in each state have accurate information.
Compare purchasing power, not just numbers. Earning more in reais doesn’t mean you’ll have a better quality of life.
Different states = different realities. Washington DC is a universe apart from Mississippi. Choose wisely.
The USA minimum wage is an important tool to understand the labor market floor, but by itself, it doesn’t paint the whole picture. The reality is more complex, more fragmented, and depends a lot on where you are.
