Jen Stark: How an artist brought her mathematical fractals from paper to NFTs
When Jen Stark decided to explore the digital universe in 2021, she had already been materializing her vision in wood, metal, and cut paper for years. But it was her first NFT, titled ‘Multiverse’, that marked a before and after in her career. In this unique piece, she transformed her characteristic style of hypnotic patterns into a looping animation, creating what she describes as “a psychedelic zoo of multi-layered shapes blooming in a kaleidoscopic garden.”
Nature as a Creative Compass
Although her works overflow with vibrant colors and geometric shapes that seem taken from alternate worlds, Stark’s inspiration is surprisingly earthly: nature. The Miami native — now based in Los Angeles — explains that she sees the universe through mathematical equations: pi, fractal spirals, patterns that govern everything from an apple to a poison dart frog.
“I visualize the mathematical part of nature,” Stark comments. “Nature is full of different equations; colors also inspire me because they act as signals of attraction or warning.” This philosophy has remained constant throughout her career, regardless of the medium she uses.
From Paper Sculptures to Generative Art
Her true immersion into the crypto world came when she moved to Los Angeles during the pandemic. With more time to experiment and motivated by the growing wave of NFTs, Stark collaborated with Art Blocks, the platform that defines on-chain generative art. The result was ‘Vortex’, a collection of 1,000 works launched in December 2021, where each NFT spins in a kaleidoscopic manner, as if the screen were a hypnotic portal.
Stark’s genius lay in something deceptively simple: she transformed her cut paper sculptures into code. What started as physical three-dimensional patterns now lives on the blockchain, accessible from any screen.
Sonic Cuties and Creative Expansion
In 2022, Stark launched ‘Cosmic Cuties’, a series of 333 pieces that left behind minimalist patterns to embrace colorful, smiling characters with the large eyes that already characterize her. The same year, Christie’s recognized her work by including ‘Light Box #2’ in their ‘Trespassing III’ auction and inviting her as a panelist at their art and technology summit.
Advice for Creators
When asked what she would say to other artists who hesitate between following their passion or listening to criticism, Stark is decisive: “Focus on what you love. You will move forward, you will find enemies, but be stubborn. People told me I couldn’t do what I wanted, but I didn’t listen to them and followed my own path. In the end, you will reap joy.”
What began as curiosity during a pandemic turned into a trajectory where Jen Stark demonstrated that art has no format limits. Whether on canvas, metal, or blockchain, her ability to turn the mathematics of nature into hypnotic visual experiences remains the guiding thread that defines her work.
