Do you still remember those early Web3 games? You'd open the game, leave it running in the background, go do whatever you wanted, and come back to claim tokens. Basically, it was just "exchanging online time for money," not much different from staring at a wall in a daze.
But recently, the YGG guild did something big. On November 25th, they launched an all-new quest system, completely scrapping the "idle time" gameplay and replacing it with "Superquests"—now you need real skills to clear levels and earn rewards.
This change might sound subtle, but it actually turns the whole play-to-earn logic on its head. The days of "as long as you're online, you're earning" are gone; now you really need to invest effort in learning the gameplay and improving your skills.
In a way, this is actually "making money by playing games," not just "leaving the game on while you sleep." This move by YGG might make a lot of players used to idling uncomfortable, but for the entire GameFi ecosystem, it might be a necessary step forward.
After idling for so long, they finally have to learn real skills. So many people are going to smash their keyboards.
Superquests sound pretty good, but I wonder if the difficulty will scare off another group of people.
Now this is what you call a game; the previous setup was just a financial scam.
YGG is going to offend some people with this move, but it really was about time.
