When you get a new smartphone, are you wondering how to transfer the 2-step authentication settings for Google Authenticator? Actually, it's surprisingly simple.

The Easiest Way: Transfer with QR Code

Old smartphone side:

  1. Open the Authenticator → Top right menu
  2. “Account Transfer” → “Export Account”
  3. After entering the PIN, select the account you want to migrate.
  4. The QR code is displayed.

New smartphone side:

  1. Open the Authenticator → Menu
  2. “Account Transfer” → “Import Account”
  3. Select “Scan QR Code”
  4. Scan the QR code of the old smartphone with the camera

Done. If the code does not work, please check the time synchronization.

If you have backup codes

On the new smartphone, select the “+” button → choose “Enter Manually” and input the backup code (private key), and it will be OK. If you have multiple accounts, it is convenient to give them easy-to-understand names.
