Abstract generation in progress

When you open a Wallet, you are told to "back up the 12 words," but honestly, I think many people don't understand why it's important. Today, I will thoroughly explain that.

What is a seed phrase?

First, let's talk about the Private Key. The Private Key is a 64-character hexadecimal number, and this is the absolute key that governs your assets. But there's no way you can remember 64 characters.

This is where the seed phrase comes in. It converts the secret key into 12 (or 15, 18, or 24) words that are easier for humans to remember. This algorithm is based on the international standard known as BIP-39, which is why it is compatible with various Wallets.

In short: Seed phrase = Readable version of the private key = Access to all your assets

Why Seed Phrases Are Necessary

1. Easier to remember than a secret key Twelve words are still better than 64 random digits.

2. Can be restored with any Wallet You can recover the seed phrase generated by MetaMask in Ledger or Trust Wallet. This is the power of standardization.

3. The frequency of handling private keys decreases If you have a seed phrase, the private key will be automatically generated. This means that the risk of the private key being stolen is reduced.

4. Backup is easy It's not a digital file; it's just written on paper. Simple and strong.

Things You Absolutely Should Not Do When Backing Up

  • Take a screenshot (saved to the cloud and that's it)
  • Show it to someone
  • Save in a digital environment

Correct Backup Method

1. Handwriting on paper is the strongest Create multiple copies and store them in different locations. One in a safe and another with a trusted person.

2. Do not make a single mistake If you make one character mistake, the Wallet will not be recognized. Recovery is impossible.

3. Don't let anyone see you Seriously. Don't tell your family.

Seed Phrase = More Valuable than Wallet Password

This is really important. More important than a bank password. A password can be reset, but if the seed phrase is leaked, all assets on the blockchain will belong to the enemy. They won't come back.

Actual cases: In 2021, $330 million was stolen through flash loans, and there are numerous cases caused by seed phrase leaks.

Summary

Seed phrase = An absolute key that controls all assets with a single piece of paper.

Once you create a Wallet, all this responsibility falls on you. It’s not the exchange; you must protect your own keys. That’s the basic rule of Web3.

It may sound like a scary story, but if managed correctly, cryptocurrencies are actually the safest way to store assets. You have control over it, unlike when you deposit it in a bank.
