Your Telegram Getting Hacked? Here's What Scammers Are Actually Doing

Abstract generation in progress

Telegram’s security reputation is real—but scammers found a loophole, and it’s working scary well.

The Scam That’s Running Wild in Vietnam

Vietnam has 17.6M Telegram users (ranked 6th globally), making it a goldmine for scammers. Here’s the move:

Step 1: You get a message from an account named “Telegram” saying your account needs verification or it’ll get banned.

Step 2: There’s a link to a website that looks exactly like Telegram’s login page—but it’s fake.

Step 3: You enter your phone number. The scammer’s system instantly requests an OTP code from the real Telegram using your number.

Step 4: Telegram sends you an OTP code (Telegram even warns: “Don’t share this with anyone”). But you don’t read warnings when you’re panicking about account lockout.

Step 5: You paste that OTP into the fake website. Your account is now theirs.

Why This Works So Well

Telegram has a feature: if you haven’t enabled 2-step verification, anyone with your phone number + OTP can log in from a new device—no password needed. Scammers exploit this gap perfectly.

Once they’re in, they steal your crypto, photos, or blackmail you with private messages.

Actually Protecting Your Account (3 Minutes)

In Telegram app:

  • Top left menu → Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification → Set Password
  • Create a strong password (not something predictable)
  • Add a recovery email
  • Confirm via OTP sent to that email

After this: Login on new devices requires BOTH OTP + your 2-step password. Scammers can’t touch it even if they have your phone number.

The Real Talk

Telegram itself isn’t the problem—it’s that users panic and skip security steps. Scammers aren’t breaking encryption; they’re using social engineering + your fear.

If you got that “verify now” message? Delete it. Telegram won’t ask you to verify on a link. Ever.

Enable 2-step verification right now. Seriously. Takes 3 minutes.
