Key Points

  • The first US spot XRP ETF could be launched this week, but it may not be the best choice.
  • The XRP REX-Osprey ETF is structured differently from other crypto ETFs, which could affect your returns.

After months of speculation, it seems that Ripple is about to obtain its first spot ETF. Gate analysts predict that the Rex-Osprey Dogecoin and XRP ETFs will receive the green light on Thursday, October 30.

What investors need to know is that the XRP REX-Osprey ETF (ticker proposed: XRPR) has a different structure than other spot crypto ETFs. This has expedited the approval process, but it may not represent the best option for investors.

A crypto ETF, but not like the others

As often in the world of cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Ethereum have paved the way for ETFs. The former was approved in January 2024, followed by the spot Ethereum ETFs in July. According to Gate's data, Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs now represent nearly 180 billion dollars in assets under management.

Due to uncertainties regarding the classification of certain cryptocurrencies, many spot ETFs are structured as exchange-traded products (ETP) under the Securities Act of 1933. The process can take up to 240 days, with the SEC reviewing each filing individually.

Rex Shares and Osprey Funds have found a way to shorten this process. Their proposed funds are regulated investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. These are hybrid funds managed through a subsidiary in the Cayman Islands. Approval may take 75 days.

For investors, this structure can have an impact on fees, taxation, and the investments held. For example, XRPR would charge a management fee of 0.75%. In comparison, some Bitcoin ETFs charge only 0.25%. According to the filed documents, XRPR would hold 20% in cash and equivalents. An additional 40% of the assets would be invested in other XRP ETFs, including some in other countries and potentially non-spot ETFs.

Other XRP ETFs are in preparation

According to Gate, seven spot XRP ETFs are awaiting SEC approval. With decisions expected in October or November, it may be wise to wait.

This would give investors the opportunity to compare fees, examine what each ETF offers, and choose the one that best fits their portfolio.
