iPhone X Series Left Behind: AI and Security Features Reserved for Newer Models in iOS 26
As I prepare my iPhone for Apple's upcoming software update, I can't help but feel a twinge of frustration for those still holding onto their iPhone X series devices. Monday's iOS 26 release promises exciting new tools including a refreshed design and enhanced security - but only if you've upgraded your hardware recently enough.
Craig Federighi, Apple's VP of software engineering, described the update as focused on "usability and personalization" during this week's iPhone 17 unveiling. "iOS 26 experiences are more expressive and personal," he claimed, highlighting new capabilities across Phone and Messages.
The update represents Apple's ongoing push to embed AI throughout its ecosystem while supposedly strengthening privacy protections. But here's where things get annoying - iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR users are completely cut off from these advancements. While these devices will continue functioning on iOS 18, they're essentially being forced into obsolescence.
Apple's solution? Buy a new phone, of course. How convenient for their bottom line.
For those with compatible devices, preparation is essential. Back up your data via iCloud or computer, clear about 3GB of space (plus extra for installation), and ensure your battery is at least half-charged.
iOS 26 does offer some genuinely useful features: real-time language translation across messages and calls, Hold Assist to manage customer service waits, and call screening to filter potential spam. The iPhone 17 also introduces Memory Integrity Enforcement to protect against sophisticated spyware - though I wonder how much of this is marketing versus genuine protection.
Curiously, Apple has jumped from iOS 18 to iOS 26, adopting a "year-of-release" naming system according to Tom's Guide. Only macOS retains its California theming with "macOS 26 Tahoe."
For X series owners, the message is clear: pay up or get left behind in Apple's AI future.
