Points to Note in Trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange

1. Choosing the appropriate exchange strategy

It is possible to adopt different trading strategies according to the various trading time slots of the Hong Kong stock market:

  • The Hong Kong stock market adopts a T+0 system, but actual settlement is on a T+3 system.
  • During the trading hours of the morning and afternoon sessions, long-term investments in blue-chip stocks based on fundamental analysis or short-term investments based on technical analysis are possible.
  • In the Hong Kong market, short selling is possible, allowing investors to borrow shares from a brokerage, sell them in the market, and then buy them back after a price decline to return to the brokerage for a profit.

2. Selecting the appropriate exchange method

Hong Kong stocks can be traded not only on the securities exchange but also through over-the-counter transactions. The following methods of trading are available:

  • Direct Stock Purchase
  • Fund ETF
  • Option
  • Futures
  • Contract for Difference (CFD)

CFDs, in particular, offer advantages such as the ability to take large positions with a small amount of capital compared to traditional securities trading, and there is no need to borrow stocks for short selling. A CFD is a type of margin trading that provides leverage of 1 to 200 times, allowing for trading amounts that are tens to hundreds of times the margin amount. CFDs offer two-way trading and do not require borrowing stocks for short selling, but it is important to note that the higher the leverage, the greater the risk.

International Positioning of the Hong Kong Stock Market

The Hong Kong stock market serves as an important bridge connecting the Chinese mainland and international markets. Through cross-border trading systems such as the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect, it has become a key gateway for international investors to access the Chinese mainland market.

Among global markets, the Hong Kong market has its own unique trading hours and system, serving as an important liquidity pool in the Asian time zone. It is crucial for investors to understand this characteristic and build efficient trading strategies.
